Each year the Township of Langley Agricultural Committee hosts a tour,
highlighting agricultural related activities within the Township.
This year our tour is taking place on Thursday, September 16, 2004, from
11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The subject of our tour is "Farming on the
Edge" - showcasing rural-urban edge planning in the Township. What
happens when urban expansion meets farmland? We will be seeing a variety
of these situations.
* Please note: This tour is open to invited guests and press only - it is not
open to the public *.
See the PDF Farm Tour brochure for further
details about our stops along the way. Of particular interest is the Blair
Farm, stop #2 on our tour, at approximately 1:45 p.m. which has been farmed
continuously since 1881, and used for dairy farming for 78 years from 1921 -
1999. This farm in particular is a good example of the many challenges
faced by farmers that are suddenly "on the edge" of urban centres. The
Blair Farm is adjacent to the Langley Airport, and an urban neighbourhood.
Approximately three-quarters of the Township of Langley (23,784 HA or
58,769 ac) is in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
Langley has 49.5% of all the farms that are within the GVRD, 7% of ALL farms in
B.C., and more farms than any other municipality in B.C.
This year's theme, "farming on the edge" could not be more fitting for any other
township but Langley with our massive urbanization underway. As members of
the farming community, we struggle to maintain a presence along with the
necessary infrastructure to prosper.
