Miracle Is Her Name

On January 15, 2005, I found one of our best female alpacas out in the field, obviously distressed about something.  I found a fetus in the field beside her, a perfectly formed little girl - she had aborted.  We were very disappointed as she has had some beautiful babies in the past for us.

We gave her a shot of antibiotics but didn't rebreed her as we wanted to wait for spring.  In early June we were planning to start rebreeding, but she didn't seem to have any interest in males in the next field, so we didn't try to breed her.

On June 14, 2005, I went out in the field around noon and saw a beautiful fawn female cria standing there.  We looked around for the mother, and were astounded to find that it was the same female that had aborted in January!

She had obviously been carrying twins, and had given birth to a perfect female cria, weighing fourteen pounds.

Mom and cria are doing well, and have taught us a valuable lesson - never say it's over till it's over!
